Why choose a single-protein diet?
Written by Zoe Russell, BSc (Hons), ANutr, Nutrition Officer, Skinner’s
At Skinner’s, we understand every dog is different and what works for one, may not work for another. That’s why our Field & Trial range features a broad range of products, to suit dogs of different ages, life stages, energy demands, and dietary needs. Our recipes utilise a variety of ingredients including fish, duck, chicken and lamb, to suit even the most sensitive stomachs.
Allergies vs. intolerances
Adverse food reactions can occur when a dog is exposed to something in the diet they cannot tolerate. Adverse food reactions present themselves in two different ways; as a food allergy, or as a food intolerance. The key difference is that an allergy often involves the immune system, whereas an intolerance is where something doesn’t agree with the animal’s body. In general, if the body is going to react to something, it tends to react to the protein of an ingredient. For example, if a dog can’t tolerate chicken in their diet, it usually means they can’t tolerate chicken protein.

Thinking of changing diet?
If you did decide to move your dog onto Skinner’s or decided to try a different flavour within our range, then we would suggest changing their food gradually over 7-10 days. This allows the digestive system to adjust to the new food and perhaps new ingredients and can help to minimise digestive upset. It is however normal during that time, for your dog to experience some flatulence and loose stools as the digestive system adapts. Our suggested transition over ten days;
Day of transition period | Amount of new food (%) | Amount of existing food (%) |
1 | 10 | 90 |
2 | 20 | 80 |
3 | 30 | 70 |
4 | 40 | 60 |
5 | 50 | 50 |
6 | 60 | 40 |
7 | 70 | 30 |
8 | 80 | 20 |
9 | 90 | 10 |
10 | 100 | 0 |
